Kelpie Mask

Design Statement:

Design a self-assembly animal animal mask from a sheet of bristol paper.

5 Week Project

Inspiration and Form Breakdown

A kelpie is a mythological creature from Scottish folklore. It is an aquatic shapeshifter that takes the appearance of a normal horse to lure in humans, before changing to its monstrous form.

Iterative Prototypes

Using Bristol paper and tape I experimented with different forms.

Tape Up Prototypes

I continued to iterate and built prototypes in two directions. One direction was more focused on realistic horse anatomy, and the other was focusing on the monstrous qualities of a kelpie.

Tabbed Prototypes

Building off of the second direction I refined the form and altered the design to assemble with folds and tabs.

Assembly Instruction Sheet and Cut File

Final Design Peer Construction

I transferred the design to Adobe Illustrator and had it cut with a CNC knife table.

A student from a different class was given the assembly sheet and followed it to assemble the mask.
