Monolith
Design Foundations Project:
Design an organic wooden form with at least two ergonomic handholds.
Sketches
I based my design on an overall reverse curve, connected with alternating convex and concave neutral curves. I kept in mind the need for two ergonomic handholds while sketching.
Final Photos
I polished with high grit sandpaper, and treated the monolith with boiled linseed oil.
Clay Model
I further refined the form using plastalina modeling clay, making sure it was comfortable in a variety of handholds. I sharpened the dynamic curvature of the overall form.
Form Transfer
After developing my monolith design I sliced it into quarter inch pieces and traced them on maple wood. After cutting out and glueing the pieces together, I sanded away the edges, working down from a belt sander to sandpaper.
